About the Zapata

Branding irons warm up in the fire as cowboys stand in the background.

The Program

This is a hands on, team-oriented experience that puts you in the center of the action with Zapata’s cattle herd. Through the week explore the ranch, ride through our 2,000 head bison herd and the Great Sand Dunes National Park on horseback and end the week with a cattle gather and traditional branding. Also available are interpretive hikes with a naturalist, roping and leather working sessions. At an additional cost, massage, rafting and fly fishing are available.

Why We Brand

Brandings allow ranchers to give newborn calves the best possible chance of thriving in their environment by vaccinating against disease and infection, they provide data on herd health and numbers, and they prevent theft against cattle rustlers by proving proper ownership.

But brandings are important for another reason, too: they bring communities of ranchers together. Neighbors from all over the area help each other out during branding season, and every branding ends with a potluck lunch. No one is forgotten – from toddlers wearing tiny chaps and oversized cowboy hats to the guys and gals with 50 years of experience under their belts – brandings are an all-inclusive event.

About the Zapata

Set back in a shady cotton woodgrove beneath the majestic 14,000-foot peaks of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains lies the historic Zapata Ranch headquarters and lodge, which was established in the late 1800’s. Elk, mule deer, migratory birds, eagles, and black bear also call this area home.

The rooms are beautifully furnished and have an elegant southwestern decor that gives them the feel of home. All rooms have individual tiled bathrooms and views that are private, peaceful, and beautiful in any season.
