A natural horsemanship experience with renowned horseman Cameron Schryver. Beginners welcome!
About the Zapata
Cam is two-time World Champion Extreme Cowboy and all those that have had the pleasure of riding with him know that his teaching methods are clear, practical and above all, fun. By applying working ranch horsemanship and riding by feel, you will leave the week feeling a deeper connection to the horse and will better understand how to communicate, developing a better handle. The days are spent with one-on-one horsemanship instruction, educational demonstrations and using the landscape as your arena. Spend the evenings around the dinner table discussing the day’s experiences.Reserve Your Spot
About the Zapata
Set back in a shady cotton woodgrove beneath the majestic 14,000-foot peaks of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains lies the historic Zapata Ranch headquarters and lodge, which was established in the late 1800’s. Elk, mule deer, migratory birds, eagles, and black bear also call this area home.
The rooms are beautifully furnished and have an elegant southwestern decor that gives them the feel of home. All rooms have individual tiled bathrooms and views that are private, peaceful, and beautiful in any season.
WHAT CAM’S STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY
In addition to an incredible level of horsemanship, Cam is a very special teacher with a remarkable eye for the person, and really helps you on a personal level with any problems or issues you run into with your horse or with yourself, communicating with your horse. It’s a very rare thing in the horse world, because a lot of clinicians and trainers are very good with horses, but not so good with people. That really makes Cam special, because he’s not only a really special person to learn from, but he’s also a great guy to have next to the campfire late at night and at the dinner table.
He still has a child-like joy for horses and riding, which really takes me back to my childhood, when all I wanted to do was climb on a horse and gallop as hard and as fast as I could. That spirit is still there in Cam, whether he’s organizing relay races or jumping fallen trees or teaching us how to lope downhill into a gulch or a canyon. It’s really fun to see that spirit that’s still there with Cam.Rutger, six year attendee of Cam’s clinics
There are certain events that can change the trajectory of ones’ life. Spending a week at Cam’s clinic at Zapata was just one of those type of events. Cam’s approach to natural horsemanship aligns with the foundation of the modern natural horsemanship movement. But unlike some other clinicians, Cam doesn’t rely on a formula, or a specific step-by-step method. Instead, he takes a lifetime of experience working with horses, and combines that with an exceptional ability to connect with people.Matt, two year attendee of Cam’s clinics
Cam has a unique way of teaching beginners, novices, and even people like myself, who have been riding most of their lives. Every day I can learn something from Cam. He has a unique way of addressing different issues and trying to get you to understand what he is trying to teach you, which I think comes from years of his work with his students at the Thatcher School. Students, when you’re young, it’s a little bit easier than stubborn adults!Pat, three year attendee of Cam’s clinics
At one point in the week, Cam said, “fear gets in the way of a lot of progress,” and I encourage fear to not get in the way of trying this program. He also set the intention for us to view the week with child-like enthusiasm, learning with excitement and playfulness, and we did! It was an incredible week where I spent hours learning from an incredible teacher. Any person, at any ability would be able to learn something from Cam and go home with a list of skills to practice. For the experience, the people and the character of the teacher, it was worth beyond what I paid. I can’t say enough nice things about the program, so if you need an escape from life where you can focus on the relationship between man and horse with the guidance of am old pro, this is the program for you. I was able to walk away with a major improvement to my horsemanship skills and confidence, as well as incredible memories I won’t forget.Sierra, first time attendee of Cam’s clinics
Riding with Cam is always such a pleasure. I have learned so much from him at each clinic because of his individual attention and he makes learning fun. I also learn just by watching how he rides with such ease and finesse. I return to Zapata each year because Cam is now a dear friend as well as other repeat guests who are now friends. I highly recommend watching Cam’s basic handle video on YouTube. I watch it often and find it very helpful. I can’t wait to get to Zapata this September!Kristina, six time attendee of Cam’s clinics
