The Program

Leading up to the workshop, work with our leather artisan’s to select a product you’d like to make while you’re here: a custom bag or pair of chinks, and fully customize it- pick your leather and hardware so we can have it all waiting for you when you arrive. Dive into making your item in the shop each morning, and in the afternoon ride out on the ranch to explore. The schedule will allow for one-on-one time to hone your skills and you’ll leave with something you’ll have forever. No previous leather experience is necessary, nor are any tools required.

About Our Leathershop

Our shop was born in Mexico on a large isolated ranch where Ranchlands founder, Duke Phillips was raised. Each month a saddle maker would come to the ranch and fix their tack, make any new bridles or reins that they needed. Duke looked forward to this visit every time and began a collection of his own tools that lived in a little leather bag on his saddle.

As Duke grew older and began managing different ranches, he always made a space for leather work. When we moved to the Chico Basin Ranch in 1999, we selected the old wood shop for the leather room. Duke started making bags for his three daughters, and then their friends wanted them and their neighbors…and thus the mercantile was born.

Today, our shop still lives at the Chico Basin, and now shares a building with the saddle house. There’s a team of women that you’ll find in there daily, too, led by Madi Phillips. Each product is inspired by the pieces that we use each day on the ranch.

Our shop allows us to continue living the lifestyle that we all love. Having a diversification in our ranching business gives us the flexibility during times of drought or weak cattle markets to ensure our ranches remain financially and ecologically viable without overtaxing our grassland resources.

About Camp

There is no better way to disconnect from technology and reconnect with your surroundings than to sleep under the stars and enjoy meals at a dining table in the middle of the prairie. Each morning your cook prepares coffee and a hearty breakfast over a fire before you head out to enjoy the day’s activities. After a long day’s work enjoy an outdoor hot shower and relax in camp before supper is called. Expect bison pot roast, local produce salads, dutch oven baked breads and a glass of wine while watching the sunset over Pikes Peak. When dinner is over, take the conversation to the campfire or retire early to your comfortable Denver Tent Company tent, tastefully furnished by Filson. Camp staff will ensure your lantern is lit as dusk falls.
