The Program

Draw, sculpt, and paint the horses of Chico Basin Ranch under the guidance of Jill Soukup, the acclaimed Western artist who specializes in equine paintings. Discussions and exercises in the lounge tent at Camp will cover the importance of understanding equine anatomy, what makes a good drawing, composition and color. Activities will include opportunities to take photos of horses running, horses working under saddle, cowboys and cowgirls riding and studying corralled horses, demonstrations, and critiques. Step away from the easel for the afternoon to go horseback riding and explore the ranch. Space is limited to 6. Intermediate to advanced skill level is suggested.

About Jill

A longtime friend of Ranchlands, Jill was the Featured Artist at Coors Western Art Sale and Best of Show for Cowgirl Up!, Caballeros Western Museum 2017, among other accolades. Jill has been attending Ranchlands Artists Gatherings for years, and when she first began painting at our ranches, she had primarily been painting architecture. She credits her time on the ranch with steering her work in a different direction — cattle, bison, ranchers, and, most of all, horses.

I’ve loved horses for as long as I can remember. I really think they’re one of the most perfectly created animals in nature.

About Camp

There is no better way to disconnect from technology and reconnect with your surroundings than to sleep under the stars and enjoy meals at a dining table in the middle of the prairie. Each morning your cook prepares coffee and a hearty breakfast over a fire before you head out to enjoy the day’s activities. After a long day’s work enjoy an outdoor hot shower and relax in camp before supper is called. Expect bison pot roast, local produce salads, dutch oven baked breads and a glass of wine while watching the sunset over Pikes Peak. When dinner is over, take the conversation to the campfire or retire early to your comfortable Denver Tent Company tent, tastefully furnished by Filson. Camp staff will ensure your lantern is lit as dusk falls.
