If a male shorebird is going to incubate eggs then he will be less brightly colored than the female. In Wilson’s Phalarope (and in other phalaropes) females are the more colorful gender and they mate with more than one male (polyandry). Here a female hunts for midges floating on the surface tension of the little visited Vega Pond where one can study dragonflies while watching these interesting shorebirds who often hunt on the water surface, spinning to bring aquatic insects up to the top of the water column.
