The Paintrock Canyon Ranch sprawls across northern Wyoming, made up of rolling meadows and streams carving through high alpine valleys.
About the Ranch
The Paintrock Canyon Ranch headquarters is located at the western base of the Bighorn Mountains. The ranch’s 80,000 acre range extends toward Cloud Peak, the highest mountain in the Bighorns, and is characterized by creeks, springs, meadows, and canyon walls reaching thousands of feet above. The terrain changes from deep orange and burgundy sandstone hills to monolithic rock formations to high mountain meadows, pine forests, and lakes. The ranch’s namesake, the Paintrock Canyon starts at the ranch headquarters and meanders for eight miles. At the bottom of the canyon is Paintrock Creek, widely known to be one of the best trout fisheries in the region. Wildlife is aplenty– bobcat, elk, mule and whitetail deer, pronghorn and bears all roam freely.
Ranch Vacations
Enjoy five nights on the ranch and four days of riding amongst the varying ecosystems the Paintrock Canyon Ranch has to offer. Take a long canter to the top of Lumen Canyon or ride through the cattle herd to learn about planned grazing and ranch management. Take an afternoon to visit the nearby Medicine Lodge Archaeological Site to see the 2,000 year old Native American petroglyphs or fly fish in one of the many fishing holes near camp. Enjoy locally sourced, chef-prepared meals alongside the bubbling Paintrock Creek. All riding levels are welcome.
Pack Trips
Ride deep into the Paintrock Canyon toward Cloud Peak with a packstring, camping alongside the horses at mountain camp. Days will be spent visiting surrounding lakes, hiking and riding miles of trails in the Bighorn National Forest, and riding out to the Ranchlands cow camp to spend the day with the ranch team. Evenings will be spent around the fire under a carpet of stars.
Riders must be intermediate or above and in good physical shape.
Accommodations
Large, safari style tents are stylishly furnished with full-sized beds, bedside tables, dressers and chairs. Ranch vacation guests will spend five nights in the creekside accommodation. Pack trip guests will spend the first and second night of their stay in these tents before heading out to the backcountry, and will then return for their final evening on the ranch. For guests continuing from the ranch onto a pack trip, you can expect a more typical backpacking style camp with single person tents.

The ranch, located near Hyattville, is 1 1/2 hours from Cody, Wyoming, and 3 hours from Billings, Montana. Both cities have airports with multiple daily flights from major airports. Roundtrip shuttles from the Cody airport to the ranch can be booked via Explore Cody Transportation.
