Letter from the Editor: Home

We’re excited to announce the return of our themed issues, something we began years ago and are now able to bring back with renewed focus. Moving forward, each edition of the Ranchlands Review will feature videos, essays, interviews, and recipes centered around a theme that dives into the values and stories that shape our lives here at Ranchlands. As part of this reintroduction, we’re also pleased to share that members of our nonprofit will receive a printed edition of each issue in the mail. The creation of these stories is funded by generous donations to the nonprofit, supporting our mission to bridge the gap between people and ranching through education and shared experiences.

For this first edition, our theme is Home. The timing feels especially fitting as we come to the end of a year marked by significant change for Ranchlands. With the closure of our Chico Basin and Zapata Ranch leases, it’s been a year of transition and relocation—asking us to reflect on what it truly means to be at home, both in a place and in a purpose.

For us, home is more than a single location. It stretches across the vast landscapes where we ranch, rooting us to a way of life and to a rhythm that feels both timeless and deeply connected to the land. Here, cattle graze, wildlife roams, and the land tells stories that are renewed with every season. This issue explores home from many angles: as a source of comfort, a bond that endures through change, and a space shaped by both past and present.

Home isn’t always a single place, nor does it stay the same. It’s a continuous evolution, blending past and present, place and people.

We invite you to explore this concept with us, to feel the connection to the land, and to reflect on what home means to you, especially in times of transition.

We’d love to hear your reflections.

What are your rituals of home? How do you make a place feel like your own?

Home.

It’s where the dog is.

Where the fabric of your life is knitted together by a color palette that pleases you and things in frequent need of attention.

It is where the work in your garden looks like a masterpiece… to you;)

Where we walk hours a day and never think if we are turning right or left.

Peace.

Safety.

Warmth.
