Submissions

We invite you to submit pitches on the theme of Lines for inclusion in Edition #03 of the Ranchlands Review. We’re especially interested in stories that explore lines through an ecological or wildlife lens. All pitches must explain how the proposed story relates back the mission of The Ranchlands Collective: to bridge the gap between urban and rural communities by reconnecting people with the land through ranching. For examples of stories that are a good fit for the Ranchlands Review, please familiarize yourself with our past publications.

We encourage pitches with a strong narrative and a compelling hook — a story that draws readers in and offers a fresh perspective on the theme. While personal essays are welcome, we’re particularly interested in submissions that dig into a story and its broader implications. We also accept poetry, artwork, and pitches for films or photo essays.

Submissions could explore Lines from these angles:
  • The lines we walk: Personal or metaphorical paths through life.
  • Property boundaries: The lines we draw on maps and the stories they tell.
  • Urban and rural divides: Exploring the contrasts and connections between these worlds.
  • Wrinkles and textures: The lines etched into portraits, hands, or landscapes.
  • Trails and game paths: How movement shapes the land.
  • Fence lines: Decisions behind their placement—water, terrain, natural boundaries.
  • Artistic expressions: Lines as the foundation of drawing, design, or storytelling.
  • Ridge lines: Natural divides in the landscape.
  • Sightlines: What we choose to frame or focus on.
  • Horizons: The ultimate line, connecting earth and sky.
  • Crafts: Lines in knitting, sewing, and other handwork.
  • Invisible lines: Boundaries between species, ecosystems, or humans and nature.
  • Bloodlines: Stories of animal genetics and breeding.
  • Migration: The unseen lines connecting journeys across time and space.

We pay between $0.50 and $1/word. Please send your pitches to pitches@ranchlands.com, including a short bio and any links or references to your prior work.

Due to the volume of pitches we receive, we cannot guarantee a response to every submission. However, please feel free to follow up with us two weeks after your first email if you have not received a response.
