Living Landscapes Artist Residency

Fostering Creativity and Stewardship through Art

Apply Now

The Ranchlands Collective Artist Residency invites artists from various backgrounds and disciplines to immerse themselves in the American ranching landscape at the Paintrock Canyon Ranch in rural Wyoming. This residency aims to bridge the worlds of art, conservation, and ranching heritage, using creative expression to communicate the importance of land stewardship and ecosystem preservation.

We believe that in order to perpetuate land stewardship and our American ranching heritage effectively, we have to learn to be good communicators, not just between ourselves in ranching, but with the outside world. We see art as one of our most powerful tools in this endeavor. By sharing ranching landscapes with artists we can understand the land through their eyes. By sharing their artwork with the rest of the world, we communicate the importance of taking care of land for present and future generations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Ranchlands Artist Residency?

The Ranchlands Artist Residency invites artists from all disciplines to live and work on a functioning cattle ranch in Wyoming. The residency offers time, space, and community for artists to immerse themselves in the landscape and culture of ranching, using their creative practice to explore and communicate themes of land stewardship, conservation, and rural life.

Who is eligible to apply?

The residency is open to emerging and established artists working in any medium, including visual arts, writing, photography, and more. We expect applicants to demonstrate commitment to their practice and a willingness to engage with the land and ranch community.

What type of person is best suited for this residency?

This residency is ideal for artists who are self-directed, adaptable, and comfortable with solitude. At the ranch,  there’s structure, but not a schedule. The best-fits for the program will be curious, respectful of different ways of life, and open to inspiration from the land and people around them.

You should be someone who thrives in quiet, remote settings and finds creative energy in nature and the pace of rural life. You’ll need to be independent and proactive in your work, as there won't be daily check-ins or programming. At the same time, a willingness to participate in communal moments — from meals to occasional ranch activities to community events — is essential.

Artists who do best will be grounded, humble, and interested in more than just making art. You’re also here to listen, observe, and engage with the story of working landscapes. This experience is not for those seeking constant stimulation or access to urban amenities, but for those seeking clarity, connection, and creative depth.

Do you accept international artists?

Yes! We welcome international applicants and are eager to foster global exchange. Please note that all travel arrangements and any necessary visas are the responsibility of the artist.

Where is the residency located?

The residency is based at Ranchlands’ headquarters, the Paintrock Canyon Ranch in Hyattville, Wyoming. Artists live in the Teacheridge house in Hyattville and work in a converted studio space on the ranch.

How long is the residency?

Residencies last between 2–3 months depending on the season and artist availability. Artists will select their preferred season as part of the application process.

How many artists are accepted per session?

We host 1–2 artists per session. This small cohort allows for meaningful engagement with the land, the ranch team, and your own creative process.

Is the residency funded?

We provide a monthly stipend of $350 to help offset food costs, and artists are also provided with Ranchlands beef during their stay. Housing and studio space are included. Artists are responsible for all other expenses, including travel and materials.

Is transportation provided?

No. Artists are responsible for their own travel to and from the ranch. You must have a personal vehicle for the duration of your stay—whether bringing your own or renting one—due to the ranch’s remote location and the need for independent transportation between housing, the studio, and local services.

What are the accommodations like?

Artists stay in the Teacherage house, which includes a private bedroom, shared bathroom, and communal kitchen/living space. The home is shared with a small group of Ranchlands staff.
