Leatherman was founded in 1975 by Tim Leatherman after a budget trip to Europe where Tim constantly found himself making roadside car repairs and fiddling with defunct hotel plumbing. He carried around an old pocket-knife but kept wishing he had a pair of pliers. When he returned home he sketched out the design for what would become the worlds first plier based multi-tool. Today, Leatherman makes all of its tools in Portland, Oregon and remains the leader in American made multi-tools.
