Fly Fishing at the Paintrock
The Paintrock Canyon Ranch has nearly four miles of exclusive access to the freestone Paintrock Creek, which flows clear and cold out of the Bighorn Mountains before winding through the ranch.
It’s a healthy, lightly pressured fishery, so the fish are willing, healthy and plentiful.
Paintrock Creek is home to rainbow trout, brown trout, and the occasional brook trout.
Most trout range from 8-15 inches, with the chance of larger fish depending on conditions and timing.
During ranch vacations, fly fishing is offered as a two-hour afternoon activity. This session is guided, and all gear is provided. Guests are welcome whether they’ve been fishing for years or have never held a fly rod. Our wranglers and camp hands will walk you through the basics — from reading water to making your first cast — and tailor the experience to your comfort level.
Guided fishing is only available during this scheduled afternoon activity. We do not have dedicated fishing guides on staff outside of this window.
Guided fly fishing is not typically offered during workshop weeks unless specifically noted in that week’s itinerary.
If you’d like to fish outside of the scheduled activity, you’re welcome to do so on your own. Before heading out, we’ll brief you on the ranch’s fishing guidelines. There are stretches of water we leave undisturbed, and we limit certain flies and techniques to protect the health of the creek.
A valid Wyoming fishing license is required for anyone planning to fish during their stay. Guests are responsible for purchasing their own license for the day(s) they intend to fish. Licenses can be obtained through the Wyoming Game & Fish Department online or at approved vendors before arrival.
