Paintrock Canyon Ranch

May 31 - June 5, 2026

Join us for a five-night generative workshop, painting alongside Jill at the Paintrock Canyon Ranch in Wyoming.

The Program

Join artist Jill Soukup for a five-night painting retreat at the Paintrock Canyon Ranch and immerse yourself in the life of an artist. Jill will lead sessions exploring composition, color theory, and the mechanics of translating what you see into paint. You'll paint en plein air as well as in the studio, with time devoted to observation and studies of horses as well as other living beings of the Paintrock.

The landscape itself will be part of your instruction: rolling meadows, streams, the carved valley walls, and ancient petroglyphs will offer sources of reference each day. Lunches will often happen out in the field as you work on your compositions. The workshop is built to help you refine technique while also deepening your understanding of your own creative process. You'll leave with new tools for painting dynamic landscapes and figures, and with the confidence to continue that practice once you return home.

About Jill Soukup

Jill Soukup was born in Buffalo, New York. Shortly thereafter, her family moved to Colorado, where she still resides. Jill’s affinity for horses as a young girl resulted in countless drawings and studies of them, which made for a strong drawing foundation. As a teen, she started a pet-portrait business, acquired jobs painting murals, and designed logos for local organizations. She graduated from Colorado State University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Fine Art. There, she received awards for illustration and design and worked as an illustrator and designer for the university. She initially pursued a career in graphic design while continuing to paint part time. After 11 years as a designer, she made the switch to full-time painting. Her work continues to gain recognition as she receives awards, appears in national publications, and shows in important juried and one-woman exhibitions.

Paintrock Canyon Ranch

The Paintrock Canyon Ranch sprawls across northern Wyoming and is made up of rolling meadows and streams carving through high alpine valleys. The ranch’s landscape is characterized by the Paintrock Canyon, which starts at the ranch headquarters and meanders for 8 miles, opening into the Paintrock Basin at foot of Cloud Peak, the highest peak in the Bighorn range. The Canyon itself is shaped by steep limestone slopes that climb thousands of feet high above the trail. Red sandstone cliffs, whose color transforms from deep orange to burgundy red with the changing light, rise above the meadows surrounding the ranch’s headquarters. The ranch is located 1.5 hours from Cody, WY, and 3 hours from Billings, MT where the largest commercial airports are. Shuttles through a third party are bookable to the ranch from Cody. Car rentals are also available from both airports.
