Horseback Riding at the Paintrock

true

Horseback riding is central to a stay at the Paintrock. Rides are designed to show guests the full breadth of the ranch—its canyons, open country, creek bottoms, and high ground—while matching each rider with a horse, pace, and experience that feels appropriate and enjoyable.

Whether you’re new to riding or have years in the saddle, our wranglers curate a riding experience custom-tailored to each group.

Our Style of Riding

Horseback riding at the Paintrock is organized around small groups, careful matching of horse and rider based on experience and comfort level, and exploring different corners of the ranch over the course of a stay.

Rides typically take place in the late morning and early afternoon, with lunch packed and enjoyed out on the ranch. Guests are shuttled to and from the barn, and each ride is led by an experienced wrangler who sets the pace and route for the day.

Riding Locations Across the Ranch

During a stay, rides typically explore several distinct areas of the ranch, accessible directly from the corrals with no trailering needed. Each location offers its own landscape, terrain, and perspective on the land.

Paintrock Canyon

Paintrock Canyon follows the creek through dramatic canyon walls and narrow corridors. Riding here is often slower, with an emphasis on navigating varied terrain and taking in the geology and wildlife of the canyon.

Red Wall

Riding off the ranch and onto BLM land, the landscape shifts dramatically. Tan, orange, and burgundy sandstone hills give way to the Chugwater formation known as the Red Wall. Rides pass through sagebrush flats and into deep arroyos, with elk herds moving through the area seasonally.

Red Hills

A ride through the ranch hayfields brings you to the Red Hills, an area marked by a striking mix of color and texture, with transitions between grasslands and sagebrush. In summer, the hills are often dotted with wildflowers, and pronghorn are frequently seen.

Luman Canyon

A ride up Luman Canyon opens up into broader country, with rolling ground and long views. On clear days, you can enjoy views of the Wind River and Absaroka Ranges and the ranch below.

Riding for Different Experience Levels

Guests come to the Paintrock with a wide range of riding backgrounds. Our wranglers shape each ride to suit the group riding that day, allowing everyone to have a safe and rewarding experience.

New or Occasional Riders

Guests who are new to riding or who ride infrequently are welcome. Rides for these groups focus on comfort, confidence, and enjoyment in the saddle, with a pace that allows riders to learn and relax while taking in the landscape.

Our Ranch Vacations are a great fit for new riders who want a stay that balances riding with other activities, while Cam Schryver's Horsemanship Workshop offers a great opportunity to build on fundamental skills.

Intermediate Riders

Intermediate riders are typically comfortable at the walk and trot and interested in covering more ground or refining their skills. Rides for these groups may include varied terrain and longer days in the saddle, with guidance and instruction from the wrangler as appropriate.

Intermediate riders will enjoy a Ranch Vacation with curated rides that allow for plenty of freedom. Cam Schryver's Stockmanship Workshop will be of interest to those looking to explore a new type of riding.

Advanced Riders

Experienced riders who are confident at the walk, trot, and canter in open spaces and over varied terrain will be matched accordingly. When conditions and group makeup allow, rides may include longer trots and canters to explore farther reaches of the ranch.

We recommend experienced riders join us for our September or October Advanced Riders Week to spend extended time in the saddle and ride at more advanced paces.

Meet Our Wranglers

Our wranglers are experienced horse people who know the ranch and the horse herd intimately. They are responsible for matching guests with suitable horses, leading daily rides, and creating an experience that is engaging, educational, and safe.

Lauren O'Toole

Lauren joined the team back in 2021 as a wrangler at the Zapata Ranch. Today, she is our Head of Stay Programs, coordinating all of our guest experiences.

Grace Phillips

Grace grew up on the Chico Basin Ranch, in Colorado, where she was helping with ranch work and riding horses from a young age. She recently moved back to Ranchlands to take part in the family business.

Taylor Dolak

Taylor grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado, and has been an avid horsewoman since the beginning. When she's not hosting guests at the Paintrock, she guides rides in Argentina.

Oliver Tautkus

Oliver was born and raised in Australia. After university, he traveled to the U.S. to do a Ranchlands internship on the Frying Pan Ranch in Texas, then moved north to the Paintrock where he did an apprenticeship with us before joining the stays team.

Meet a Few Members of our Herd

The Paintrock herd is made up of ranch horses selected for soundness, temperament, and the ability to travel long distances comfortably. Horses are matched to guests based on riding experience, confidence, and goals for the stay.

Guests ride the same horse throughout the week, allowing time to build familiarity and trust.

Candy Man

Candy Man is one of the standouts in our herd and a long-time favorite among the wranglers. He has exceptionally smooth gaits, plenty of heart, and a calm, reliable temperament. Sure-footed in rocky terrain and steady across long miles, he’s as comfortable navigating mountain trails as he is cantering across the open prairie. Candy Man is trusted for his consistency and confidence, and we feel fortunate to have him in the string.

Belle

Belle is a sturdy Belgian mare with an impressive range. She’s comfortable pulling a pack string, covering ground in the Bighorns, and working cattle when needed. Despite her draft build, Belle moves easily and can keep pace across open meadows alongside the rest of the herd. She has a lot of personality and is a crowd favorite each season. We look forward to her return to the ranch every spring!

Goblin

Guests love to rename Goblin because as soon as they meet him, they see how his name doesn’t quite fit his angelic personality. He’s one of those rare horses that anyone can ride and enjoy. He will lend his confidence to a novice rider one week and then carry an advanced rider loping across the Red Hills the next. He doesn’t bat at eye at any task and is as sweet and patient as they come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a required riding level?

In general, our ranch vacations and workshops welcome all levels of riders, from beginner to advanced.

The exceptions:

  • Guests joining for Advanced Riders Week will need to be at an advanced level and comfortable at all gaits as well as riding out in open spaces as well as in groups.
  • Our stockmanship clinic with Cam Schryver builds on horsemanship skills for those who would like to learn stockmanship and basic roping skills. While no experience with livestock is required, riders should be of an intermediate skill level and very comfortable on the back of a horse.

How many hours will I spend in the saddle?

Typical rides out on the ranch are approximately 5 hours long, departing basecamp at 9 a.m., having lunch in the field with your horse, and returning to camp at around 2 p.m.

Expect rides during the Advanced Riders Week to be longer.

How are horses assigned?

You are matched with a horse based on information about your riding experience, confidence, and size collected during a pre-arrival call with our team. Guests ride the same horse throughout their stay, allowing time to build familiarity and trust.

Will we trot or canter?

That depends on the riding experience of the group, terrain, and conditions. Wranglers set the pace for each ride to ensure safety and enjoyment. Guests who are comfortable and experienced may have opportunities for faster gaits when appropriate.

I'm a beginner. Will I be expected to go fast?

No. Riding pace is always matched to what is safe and appropriate for each rider. Beginners are never pushed beyond their comfort or ability.

I'm experienced. Will I be bored?

Experienced riders are grouped accordingly whenever possible during Ranch Vacation weeks. When conditions allow, rides may include longer trots and canters and cover more ground.

Guests looking for a strongly riding-focused experience may want to consider our September or October Advanced Riders Week.

Can I bring my horse?

Ranch vacation guests may bring and board their horses at the ranch for $25/night. We provide an outdoor stall with dirt floor and access to water. We require proof of Coggins/health certificate. Guests supply their own feed and must be accompanied by a staff member on all rides.

Do wranglers offer instructions or tips?

Yes. Wranglers are happy to offer horsemanship guidance and riding tips during rides. However, riding instruction is informal and situational rather than structured lessons. For those looking for maximum instruction, we recommend Cam Schryver's Fundamentals or Stockmanship clinic.

Is there a weight limit for horseback riding?

We cannot accommodate riders heavier than 230 lbs.

Is horseback riding the main focus of every stay?

Not always. Some stays include more riding than others, and some workshops include limited or no riding. Guests for whom riding is the primary goal are encouraged to choose a Ranch Vacation, Harvest Week, Cam Schryver Clinic, or Advanced Riders Week.
