This spring, The Ranchlands Collective is hosting a week of nature-based field trips for local school groups at Paintrock Canyon Ranch in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming.
These half-day field experiences introduce students to the connections between wildlife, waterways, and working landscapes through hands-on activities and guided exploration.
Programs are led by Ranchlands staff and collaborating educators and are designed to support classroom learning in ecology, biology, and land stewardship.
Teachers may schedule visits for their classes between May 4-8, 2026.
What Students Will Experience
Each field trip combines outdoor exploration with interactive learning. Activities may vary depending on group age, size, and weather conditions, but typically include two or more of the following experiences.
Macroinvertebrate Creek Sampling
Students wade into Paintrock Creek using nets to collect aquatic insects and other small organisms.
With guidance from instructors, students learn how these species indicate water health and how they fit into a larger food web that includes fish, birds, and mammals.
Habitat & Wildlife Scavenger Hunt
Students explore the landscape using an ecology-focused scavenger hunt and observation tools such as iNaturalist.
Along the way, they document plants and wildlife while learning how ranch management practices influence habitat for different species.
Naturalist Walk & Bird Observation
A guided walk introduces students to the birds, plants, and ecological systems of the canyon.
Students practice observation skills, learn basic bird identification, and discuss migration, habitat needs, and seasonal wildlife patterns.
Ranching & Land Stewardship Demonstration
Students also see how a working ranch operates.
Depending on the group, this may include a horse and rider demonstration, roping demonstration, or discussion of grazing management, offering insight into how ranching and conservation intersect on the landscape.
