Paintrock Canyon Ranch
June 14 - 19, 2026
Join writer Molly Wizenberg for a five-night retreat at the Paintrock Canyon Ranch, where – amidst the dramatic western landscape, inspired by horseback rides that lead us worlds away from our regular lives – we’ll cultivate, harness, and make writing driven by our obsessions.
The Program
When we write about our own lives, many of us get stuck on the same worry: “Why would anyone care about my story?” Of course we want our work to be read, and we want it to matter, to connect deeply with readers. But the tricky paradox of writing personal stories is that our work has the greatest potential to speak to a broad range of readers when, against our impulses, we aim not to interest everyone; we must write as the very specific and idiosyncratic people we really are. Humans are endlessly weird and intriguing, each of us operating according to our own set of impulses, fears, and ruling passions. For a writer, those obsessions can power a whole life’s work.
If obsession isn’t a word that resonates, call it fascination, infatuation, preoccupation, hang-up – whatever you name them, the things that captivate you are a source of energy that is uniquely yours. They can guide and help you explore the questions that propel you in writing and in life.
In addition to practical and generative exercises, we’ll read and discuss short works by writers including Melissa Febos, Claire Cameron, and CJ Hauser. Participants will share work and receive constructive feedback from the instructor and the group. You’ll leave with a handful of fresh drafts and ideas to carry you forward.
This workshop is for creative nonfiction writers of all kinds: memoirists, essayists, journal-keepers, furtive napkin-scribblers. All levels of writing and riding experience are welcome. The only prerequisites are a willingness to explore new landscapes on horseback, and a desire to use writing to better understand your life.

Location
The ranch, located near Hyattville, is 1 1/2 hours from Cody, Wyoming, and 3 hours from Billings, Montana. Both cities have airports with multiple daily flights from major airports. Roundtrip shuttles from the Cody airport to the ranch can be booked via Explore Cody Transportation.
The Paintrock Canyon Ranch sprawls across northern Wyoming and is made up of rolling meadows and streams carving through high alpine valleys. The ranch’s landscape is characterized by the Paintrock Canyon, which starts at the ranch headquarters and meanders for 8 miles, opening into the Paintrock Basin at the foot of Cloud Peak, the highest peak in the Bighorn range. The Canyon itself is shaped by steep limestone slopes that climb thousands of feet high above the trail. Red sandstone cliffs, whose color transforms from deep orange to burgundy red with the changing light, rise above the meadows surrounding the ranch’s headquarters. The ranch is located 1.5 hours from Cody, WY, and 3 hours from Billings, MT where the largest commercial airports are. Shuttles through a third party are bookable to the ranch from Cody. Car rentals are also available from both airports.
