Creative Weeks at the Paintrock

Our series of painting and writing workshops, taught by masters of their respective crafts, take advantage of the inspiring ranch setting to help you tap into your deepest wells of creativity.

Program Approach

Our creative workshops are specialty stays built around a specific discipline, such as writing (including memoir, fiction, and personal narratives) and oil and plein air painting.

Each workshop is led by one or two guest instructors and follows its own structure. Daily schedules vary by week and a sample itineraries are outlined on each individual event page.

Group sizes are capped at 14 people to allow for meaningful feedback and conversation.

What the Ranch Offers

Creative work benefits from three things: time, attention, and a change of environment, and the Paintrock provides all three.

Time. You’re removed from daily logistics, meals are prepared for you, you're disconnected from WiFi, and there’s room to focus on your work without having to manage everything else.

Attention. The landscape of the ranch demands observation. Weather shifts quickly, light moves across the canyon as the day progresses, and wildlife appears and disappears. You'll find yourself noticing the world around you in a way that is harder to achieve in your day-to-day, and this will translate into inspiration for your work.

Change of environment. Stepping outside your normal setting often changes how you work. Being in a working ranch setting will alter your pace and perspective and influence what you write or paint.

The Paintrock Experience

While each workshop week has a distinct focus, the foundation of the ranch experience remains the same as the rest of our stays.

Guests stay in comfortable canvas tents, enjoy meals prepared on site by our camp chef, and spend their days immersed in the landscape. Some weeks will include optional opportunities for horseback riding, as well as other outdoor activities such as hiking and fishing.
