Paintrock Canyon Ranch
June 8 - 13, 2025
Join for a five-night artistic study of the horse with renowned artist Julie Ferris.
The Program
In this course each participant will learn about the horse as an art subject and how to approach painting the horse with oil. Open to all skill levels, Julie will adapt the course and instruction to each participant’s skill level. There will be instruction on creating a small portrait study of a horse, as well as practice in drawing and oil studies of specific anatomical parts of the horse, and en plein air painting. The days will be split into opportunities for both making art and riding through the incredible Paintrock scenery.
About Julie Ferris
Ferris’ work is a tribute to the Horse where classical meets modern. She has focused on horses as her main subject matter for the past 13 years. By studying their multifaceted characteristics, she meticulously recreates their unique expressions and dispositions. However, the most crucial element is the purpose and feeling behind her work, the celebration and emotive nature of horses, which surpasses the details.
Currently living and working in Atlanta, Georgia she travels throughout the United States and sometimes internationally to first meet and photograph the horses she paints in her custom commission portraits. In her personal work she explores the essence of the horse and experiments with different forms of expression inspired by her subject.

Paintrock Canyon Ranch
The Paintrock Canyon Ranch sprawls across northern Wyoming and is made up of rolling meadows and streams carving through high alpine valleys. The ranch’s landscape is characterized by the Paintrock Canyon, which starts at the ranch headquarters and meanders for 8 miles, opening into the Paintrock Basin at foot of Cloud Peak, the highest peak in the Bighorn range. The Canyon itself is shaped by steep limestone slopes that climb thousands of feet high above the trail. Red sandstone cliffs, whose color transforms from deep orange to burgundy red with the changing light, rise above the meadows surrounding the ranch’s headquarters. The ranch is located 1.5 hours from Cody, WY, and 3 hours from Billings, MT where the largest commercial airports are. Shuttles through a third party are bookable to the ranch from Cody. Car rentals are also available from both airports.
