Paintrock Canyon Ranch
July 6 - 11, 2025
Spend five nights at the Paintrock Canyon Ranch, drawing and painting horses, people and landscapes under the guidance of acclaimed Western artists Teal Blake and Duke Beardsley.
The Program
Spend five nights at the Paintrock Canyon Ranch, drawing and painting horses, people and landscapes under the guidance of acclaimed Western artists Teal Blake and Duke Beardsley. Both Teal and Duke have spent the past two decades earning widespread recognition for their distinctive interpretations of the American West, with works featured in prestigious galleries, museums, and collections across the country. This hands-on workshop will explore the fundamentals of strong composition, color, and technique, with a focus on understanding your subject to create compelling artwork. It will also focus on The Why! Participants will have unique opportunities to observe and photograph horses in motion—working under saddle, in the corrals, and ridden by cowboys and cowgirls—alongside in-depth demonstrations, discussions, and critiques of anatomy, conformation, equitation and movement. All supplies are provided and included in the registration fee.
Scholarships are available through Cowboy Artists of America.
About Teal Blake
Teal grew up in Montana, on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains, surrounded by ranching country.
Teal has been painting professionally since 2005. In 2014 his labor, talent, and accomplishments earned him an invitation into the renowned Cowboy Artists of America organization. He has also been honored with several awards, including the Joe Beeler CAA Foundation Award, 1st Place Watercolor at the Phippen Museum, and has been featured in magazines such as Western Horseman, Western Art & Architecture, Southwest Art, Ranch & Reata, and the Cowboy Way. Teal creates in a variety of mediums but his medium of choice is watercolor and he has always liked to show what makes the traditional west: cowboys not always clean shaven; shirts not always creased; and their horses manes not always long.
About Duke Beardsley
Duke Beardsley is a sixth generation Coloradan and has been drawing and painting the American West for as long as he can remember. Formally trained at The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Duke's work has seen its way into many notable collections such as the Denver Art Museum, Booth Museum, Ritz Carlton, Forbes, UMB Banks, and the Whitney Collection. Raised in both Denver and on a 1000 acre cattle ranch in eastern Colorado, Duke's dual upbringing is the foundation for his unique blend of traditional western iconography and contemporary art sensibilities.

Paintrock Canyon Ranch
The Paintrock Canyon Ranch sprawls across northern Wyoming and is made up of rolling meadows and streams carving through high alpine valleys. The ranch’s landscape is characterized by the Paintrock Canyon, which starts at the ranch headquarters and meanders for 8 miles, opening into the Paintrock Basin at the foot of Cloud Peak, the highest peak in the Bighorn range. The Canyon itself is shaped by steep limestone slopes that climb thousands of feet high above the trail. Red sandstone cliffs, whose color transforms from deep orange to burgundy red with the changing light, rise above the meadows surrounding the ranch’s headquarters. The ranch is located 1.5 hours from Cody, WY, and 3 hours from Billings, MT where the largest commercial airports are. Shuttles through a third party are bookable to the ranch from Cody. Car rentals are also available from both airports.
Location
The ranch, located near Hyattville, is 1 1/2 hours from Cody, Wyoming, and 3 hours from Billings, Montana. Both cities have airports with multiple daily flights from major airports. Roundtrip shuttles from the Cody airport to the ranch can be booked via Explore Cody Transportation.
Rates
$4,550 per person includes all activities, instruction, amenities, and meals. Tax and optional gratuity not included. All tents are private.
